Travesia: Agri-tourism farm & training hub

The Agri-tourism Farm presents a unique opportunity to connect sustainable agricultural practices and architectural design by offering immersive experiences that combine agriculture, education, and leisure. This project envisions a sustainable agri-tourism farm and training hub in Guinobatan, Albay, Philippines.

Nestled amidst the beauty of the Bicol region, the project aims to: cultivate knowledge, embrace sustainability, celebrate Filipino identity, and showcase Bicol’s bounty.

Through its design and function, this project strives to create a vibrant hub that fosters a deeper appreciation for agriculture, sustainability, and the cultural traditions of Bicol.

Geographical Location

The site is located in the barangay of Travesia, situated in Guinobatan, Albay. Located at approximately 13.1878 latitude and 123.6127 longitude on Luzon Island, it has an elevation of about 90.3 meters (296.3 feet) above sea level.

The municipality of Guinobatan is renowned for its rich agricultural heritage in the Philippines. It is known as the "Garden Town" of the province due to its abundant agricultural fields and flourishing horticulture farms.

Zoning

The project site is strategically divided into four distinct zones, each catering to specific functions:

  • Administrative Zone: This zone prioritizes functionality and provides a welcoming entrance. It encompasses the administrative building, parking facilities with a dedicated maintenance area.
  • Active Zone: This vibrant zone caters to visitor engagement and active experiences. It houses the visitor center, a function hall suitable for events, a designated picnic area, a restaurant and cafe for dining, and an edible landscape that can serve educational and aesthetic purposes.
  • Passive Zone: This zone offers a tranquil environment for relaxation and rejuvenation. It includes a campsite for overnight stays, comfortable cabanas for day visits, and an overseer’s house for on-site management.
  • Farming Zone: This central zone constitutes the heart of the agricultural operation. It serves as the primary space for farming activities, training programs, and demonstrations showcasing sustainable practices.

The design concept embodies a harmonious fusion of nature, Filipino heritage, regional identity, and modern functionality, offering visitors a holistic and immersive experience.

  • Cabanas are reimagined as modern interpretations of the iconic bahay kubo, reflecting Filipino cultural heritage through their form while utilizing locally sourced, sustainable materials.

  • Pathways in the picnic area subtly weave through the space like the veins of a sprouting plant, encouraging connection with the natural environment.

  • The visitor center's roof takes inspiration from a farmer's hat, a symbol of dedication and connection to the land.

  • The restaurant and cafe pays homage to Bicol’s natural beauty with its roofline reminiscent of the majestic Mayon Volcano, highlighting its unique location.

Building Materials

Chosen for sustainability, local availability, and cultural resonance, these materials blend traditional aesthetics with modern functionality, ensuring minimal emissions, enhanced insulation, and optimized natural light.
